5 Reasons not to get excited about Modern Warfare 3

It’s probably highly apparent from this article that I’m not a fan of Call of Duty (despite owning all of them since Call of Duty 3). My personal favourite is World at War and the series has slipped downhill rapidly since then. They were once brilliant – I spent approximately 300 hours on Call of Duty 4 and World at War combined yet Modern Warfare 2 proved disappointing and I am yet to pass Level 10 on Black Ops.

The hype-train for Modern Warfare 3 is in full flow so allow me to bring you down to earth.

1)      Same old, same old.

The Call of Duty formula has not really changed since Call of Duty 4. Whilst minor modifications have been made to the engine, each new iteration is essentially a cosmetic rehash of the previous. Whilst Treyarch’s efforts have brought about some initiative into the series such as through the Zombie mode, Infinity Ward’s efforts have been lacking. Spec Ops of Modern Warfare 2 was nowhere near as engaging as the co-op play offered in World at War. Treyarch’s trend continued in Black Ops with another Zombie mode with 2 excellent maps and showed creativity in the “wager matches” and COD Points that brought about a new feel to the multiplayer yet the core gameplay remained very similar. Unless major changes are made, then Modern Warfare 3 will probably play a great deal like Modern Warfare 2 and with the series being so lucrative for Activision, it’s highly unlikely that any drastic changes will be made to a “winning formula”.

2)      DLC

It’s almost a dead-cert that a lot of features will be left out of the core game to sell as DLC. As if £40 wasn’t enough for a short SP campaign and a select few maps, feel free to fund Activision by paying £10 for another 3 maps every few months. Oh, and if you don’t get it you’ll probably be the only friend that hasn’t done so. Awkward. At least with World at War and Black Ops map packs you had a zombie map to go with it (which was often a great deal of fun to play with friends) – but map packs for Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2 were simply rushed, badly designed and cash cows.

3)      Release timing.

A Call of Duty iteration has been released around October-November every year since 2005 in order to appease the mass market rush of the holidays. However, this year November is proving to be a great month for gamers. Uncharted 3, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and more are all scheduled for release shortly before or after the release of Modern Warfare 3. Many people will simply be unable to afford all these games so a new Call of Duty might have to take the backseat! However, this is usually the case most years and Call of Duty comes out on top of the charts so Activision need not worry whilst superior games linger in the shadows.

4)      Battlefield 3.

Maybe this should have gone under Point 3 but I felt it deserved its own point. Let’s not beat around the bush, Battlefield is easily one of the best FPS series to date. Whilst previously it was the turf of hardcore PC gamers, the release of the games on consoles beginning with Battlefield 2: Modern Combat has brought the Battlefield series to a much wider audience. Battlefield: Bad Company caught the eye of many gamers with its destruction-centred Frostbite engine and the sequel is currently regarded as one of the best shooters this generation. With the series reverting to its roots away from the Bad Company spin-off, Battlefield 3 clearly has the potential to become the greatest shooter to grace gaming. With the in-depth and addictive multiplayer of the previous Battlefield games modernised with the Frostbite engine, this is set to be one of the best shooters that the gaming world has seen.

5)      The Single-player campaign.

Just like CoD4 and especially Modern Warfare 2, expect a very short single-player. Yes, it may be impressive and resemble a Michael Bay movie but at the end of the day a game should be able to stand on its own via the single-player campaign and in modern times, building a game solely around the multiplayer is not good practice. Many people buy the Call of Duty games without even touching the single-player but once you’ve had enough of campers and bugs and poorly designed maps, you’ll probably want something else to fall onto to assure yourself that spending £40 was a good idea.

So that’s my 2 cents. Feel free to go pre-order Modern Warfare 3 (and save a few quid behind for the inevitable DLC) but I’ll pass thanks. Feel free to prove me wrong Activision and release a new game – not Modern Warfare 2.1, maybe then you’ll get my hard-earned cash but for now I’ll stick with Uncharted 3. Yes, it may not be a massive overhaul over Uncharted 2 but at least it will have an excellent Single-player campaign that is longer than 3 hours and multiplayer that isn’t full of screaming 10 year olds that gets stale after 10 minutes. Oh, and it has Sully. Beat that Activision.

(Editor: We aren’t completely against MW3 here on this site – expect a counter article in the next couple of days!)

    1. I’ve only played 1 COD game and that is Black Ops.
    2. DLC is optional.
    3. I don’t plan on buying it Day 1 like I did Black Ops. I’ll get as a deal for Black Friday together with Uncharted 3.
    4. Don’t care about BF3.(although the open beta might change my mind)
    5. Single-player isn’t important for me(in shooters).

Well, it’s a different kind of market, and if that’s how he wants to play his £45 game, that’s up to him.

    • Elisee

Hey, everyone is entitled to an opinion!

    • http://aGamingSite.com Harry Barnes

Well I’ll respond to how you have..
      1) Good, good to know
      2) It is, but why make it so expensive compared to competition, i.e. Bad Company 2 that did free DLC?
      3) That’s also good to know, I’m sure people will do.
      4) Wow, this is surprising, do you want it to copy COD completely? Or is there something you don’t like about it in particular?
      5) Well, it’s nice to have it on the side, and can be really good occasionally.

Skipping this game also ! Big fan of Cod series but since Cod4 there is virtually zero improvements same old small maps bad spawn design (specially black ops) overpriced map packs and bunch of unbalanced perks, thankfully to E3 demo I noticed how rush job it will be, same old mw2 slow motions they even recycled gun sounds and enemy audio cues.Bad Company 2 showed me that there is a lot more enjoyable gameplay, dedicated servers, and I don’t have to deal with bunch of dashboarding cunts who play cod games only to have their huge e-penis ratios

  • Ellocomeloso

LOL they already confirmed that the SP will be a lot longer. So you failed there.

    • http://aGamingSite.com Harry Barnes

They said that last time. They say that with all games really. You don’t expect them to say its going to be the same or less, do you?

  • Net Cool7

The reputation of this site has gone down to the septic tank where all shit is salvaged because of this article. The reasoning is thoroughly retarded considering a full blown MW3 game has yet to be released. And the lame arguments are typical of what COD haters say all over the internet.
Casual gamers are actually tired of these COD haters who just keep on posting idiotic opinions for any COD article that comes out. And your site blatantly post another antiCOD article. Shame.

    • http://aGamingSite.com Harry Barnes

‘a full blown MW3 game has yet to be released’   I’m assuming you mean because MW3 hasn’t been released we can’t comment on it? I doubt they will release MW3-2 or whatever you would call it! But it’s isn’t a lame argument at all, just as valid as the next. We aren’t anti-COD this is just one article. There will be another article soon!

  • Jake

I aggree with you, although multiplayer is a huge component in an FPS, its should still stand on its singleplayer OR it must remove the singleplayer completely.

    • http://aGamingSite.com Harry Barnes

Yeah, I mean MAG or Socom aren’t great, but they’re just focus on MP.

  • Bi0raptor

My thought`s are pretty close to yours, while I am not a COD hater as I also own all COD titles going back to COD2 I feel like deja vu when ever I see or play a new CODF title.
All that is different is the story`s,if at all there is one.I think the nears anyone ever got to delivering a good campaign story was Treyarch’s Black Op`s.
I for one will be pushing my money towards Battlefield`s way,I may pick up COD3 at a VERY later date if I find any spare money down the back of my sofa.

  • Plrbear1028

you dont know what you’re talking about. you’re probably some battlefield fan boy. get a life and learn how to play cod before you bash it, you ****ful author

    • http://aGamingSite.com Harry Barnes

We will not tolerate that kind of language. He has every COD game since COD4, did you read that bit?

  • Mauricec85

I think that battlefield 3 should have been the number 1 reason cod is successful and is a good game so why mess with what works but I feel that the way that the battlefield franchise is going and how in depth bf3 looks that were mw3 is a great game u can almost call bf3 a war simulation it looks that good and gameplay is that realistic add to the great audio I think that and I know alot of people might think I’m wrong but I think that bf3 will surpass cod4 as the best fps shooter ever

  • TCWJR13

Really doesnt matter what no one here thinks cause every single cod  fan-boy is gunna run out there and by the frikkin game soon as it comes out.

    • http://aGamingSite.com Harry Barnes

That’s what seems to happen, but I for one will be closely keeping an eye on the competition.

I’ll buy both MW3 and Battlefield3.  I would only buy BF3 i it wasn’t for one thing: it hasn’t split screen and is no good for free-for-all. Some of us have brothers or real friends who live near us and if we want to get together for a gaming night it is impossible. There is nothing more awesome than getting together and play split screen with some beers (maybe betting).  FPS multiplayer started with free-for-all, the real hardcore gamers know it. Been playing for 15 years. I hate both MW3 fanboys AND BF3 fanboys.

    • http://aGamingSite.com Harry Barnes

I completely agree with being open to both series, and yeah free-for-all was where it started. Although, who knows, maybe they will add or still have to announce split-screen?

  • http://aGamingSite.com Harry Barnes

Everybody has their own opinion and i think its wrong for anybody to criticise their decisions :)

  • thrall

    I completely agree with you
